Title: Linux or Windows?
Post by: chloe vevrier on June 17, 2009, 02:36:03 AM
Hi everyone !
Lately, i have been really considering switching to Linux.
I have done a little bit of research on my own about Linux.
I am somewhat familiar with what Linux is about.

I am sure there are a few Linux People in here.
If you are that person ...

1. What made you decide to use Linux
2. Do you Dual Boot with Windows as well?
3. How long did it take for you to get the hang of it?
4. 1 - 10 .. 10 being the hardest .. for a person with no Programming experience.. Rate how hard it would be for a beginner to use Linux for the everyday tasks.
5. Do you have a favorite Website you recommend for Linux?
6. What version are you using and why?
7. What version do you recommend for a beginner?
8. Anything else you want to add that may be of interest ?

You don't need any programming experience.
Most distro's come with a GUI (graphical user interface), so most things you will ever need to do on a daily basis (for normal users) can be done without knowing any terminal commands.

if you want to program with it pearl, python, C and C++ are some good languages.

i think these are the best distro's to try out:
- ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com

- linux-mint http://www.linuxmint.com

- opensuse http://www.opensuse.org

I don't have windows so i don't dual boot with windows :)

's often been said that Linux is more secure and much more stable in general, although there is no Linux per se, but many flavors of it. Linux users tend to be sometimes fanatic in their support for their favorite operating system. The power of their convictions may be very impressive, but that shouldn't be the only reason to believe they're right. On the other hand, the average Linux user is somewhat more knowledgeable than the average individual when it comes to computers, so there's a higher chance that he knows what he's talking about. On the other side, Windows doesn't seem to have that many true fans or they're not that vocal. This might be explained by the fact that the Microsoft company has been involved in quite a few suits which have affected its image, and consequently the image of its products as well.

I am using Linux Ubuntu since 8 months. here are about 60,000 viruses known for Windows, 40 or so for the Macintosh, about 5 for commercial Unix versions, and perhaps 40 for Linux. Most of the Windows viruses are not important, but many hundreds have caused widespread damage.

Linux is very cheap to buy or approximate free but Windows Operating System is expensive to buy. Windows O.S users using the word DOS for command interpreter whereas Linux users using the word shell for command interpreter.
I think Windows operating system is good for personal usage.

Speed is another factor that one has to be seen. It is argued that the latest version of Ubuntu for faster startup and shutdown time, the Windows operating system. In addition when it comes to overall performance, the performance of Linux is much better than Windows XP. The reason for this is that Linux uses memory more efficiently than XP. To repair Windows, you can consult the operating system support provider.

Linux companies and hardware manufacturers have made great advancements in hardware support for Linux and today Linux will support most hardware devices. However, many companies still do not offer drivers or support for their hardware in Linux.    Because of the amount of Microsoft Windows users and the broader driver support, Windows has a much larger support for hardware devices and a good majority of hardware manufacturers will support their products in Microsoft Windows.

I tri-boot (Ubuntu / Win7 / XP). Linux is the least friendly! Equally, I have to keep up with Windows, because that is where the customers are!

I am really impress to read these nice reviews on this nice thread. The specific reasons why people try Linux vary wildly, but the overall reason boils down to one thing: They hope Linux will be better than Windows. Common yardsticks for measuring success are cost, choice, performance, and security. There are many others. But every Windows user who tries Linux, does so because they hope it will be better than what they've got.

Linux is an open source operating system whereas Windows OS is commercial. Linux has access to source code and alters the code as per user need whereas Windows does not have access to the source code. In Linux, the user has access to the source code of the kernel and alter the code according to his need.

In short, Liniux allows you the freedom to change the OS according to your wants.
That is it.
I hope more people start using Linux over Windows.
