You're right. Search engine marketing is the broad term used to describe internet marketing. Search engine optimization and online advertising are part of SEM.

The difference between SEO and SEM is simply that Search Engine Optimization is part of Search engine marketing or Search marketing as it is widely known. Both processes aim in increasing visibility in search engines.

SEO means ranking your keywords top in the search engine through organic way
SEM means through paid advertising visible your website for a particular keywords top in the search engine.
