Typography is the design and use of typefaces as a means of communication. It is considered to have begun with Gutenberg and the development of moveable type. But typography has its roots in handwritten letterforms. Typography encompasses everything from calligraphy through digital type and type on Web pages. It also includes type designers who create new letterforms as well as designers and calligraphers who use the letters as part of their designs.

Typography is, quite simply, the art and technique of arranging type. It's central to the work and skills of a designer and is about much more than making the words legible.

Typography (from the Greek words τύπος (typos) = form and γραφή (graphe) = writing) is the art and technique of arranging type in order to make language visible. The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading (line spacing), adjusting the spaces between groups of letters (tracking) and adjusting the space between pairs of letters (kerning[2]). Type design is a closely related craft, which some consider distinct and others a part of typography; most typographers do not design typefaces, and some type designers do not consider themselves typographers.[3][4] In modern times, typography has been put into motion—in film, television and online broadcasts—to add emotion to mass communication

Typefaces and Fonts: Many people use the terms "typeface" and "font" interchangeably, but there are actually some differences between these two item.

"Typeface" is the terms give to a family of fonts (such as Helvetica Regular, Helvetica Italic, Helvetica Black, and Helvetica Bold). All of the various versions of Helvetica make up the typeface.

"Font" is the term used when someone is referring to only one weight or style within that family (such as Helvetica Bold).

In practice, if someone is not a typography expert, they will likely use the term "font" regardless of which one of these terms they truly mean.

Typeface Classifications: These are sometimes called "generic font families". They are large groupings of typefaces based on generic classifications that different fonts fall under.. On Web pages, there are six types:

serif
sans-serif
monospaced
cursive
fantasy
script
